Eric Whitacre (* 2. Januar 1970 [1]) ist ein US-amerikanischer Komponist und Dirigent. Er komponiert für Chöre, Blasorchester und elektronische Musik. Weltweit bekannt wurde er besonders durch seine Arbeit mit virtuellen Chören, deren chorale Gemeinschaft per Internet hergestellt wird.[2][3][4] [5] Zu ihren Stücken zählen u.a. Lux Aurumque,[6] und Sleep,[7], die aus Videos von Internetnutzern zusammengesetzt wurden.

Leben

Mit 18 begann Whitacre im Chor seines Colleges zu singen[8], er studierte Komposition und Chorleitung an der University of Nevada in Las Vegas, wo er Cloudburst und weitere Stücke für Chor und für Blasorchester schrieb. Whitacre erwarb den Master in Musik an der Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

Eric Whitacre ist mit der Sopranistin Hila Plitmann verheiratet, hat einen Sohn und lebt mit seiner Familie in Los Angeles.

Whitacre ist Gründungsmitglied der Dirigentenvereinigung BCM International[9].
