Jas Elsner

Jaś Elsner (* 19. Dezember 1962 in London) ist ein britischer Kunsthistoriker, der sich hauptsächlich mit der antiken Kunst beschäftigt. Elsner ist Humfry Payne Senior Research Fellow in Classical Art am Corpus Christi College in Oxford sowie Visiting Professor of Art History an der Universität von Chicago.

Leben

Nach dem Studium der Klassischen Altertumswissenschaft und der Kunstgeschichte in Cambridge, Harvard und London wurde Elsner 1991 am King’s College in Cambridge promoviert. Nach einer Anstellung als research fellow am Jesus College in Cambridge hatte er acht Jahre lang zunächst als Lecturer, dann als Reader Kunstgeschichte der griechischen und römischen Antike am Courtauld Institute of Art in London unterrichtet. Im Jahr 1999 wurde er zum Humfry Payne Senior Research Fellow in Classical Art and Archaeology am Corpus Christi College ernannt. Seit 2003 ist er regelmäßig Visiting Professor of the History of Art an der Universität Chicago. Darüber hinaus ist Elsner Mitglied der wissenschaftlichen Beiräte verschiedener Fachzeitschriften und Mitherausgeber der wissenschaftlichen Buchreihe Greek Culture in the Roman World der Cambridge University Press.

Elsner ist verheiratet und hat vier Kinder.

Forschungsschwerpunkte

Elsner arbeitet zur klassischen und spätantiken Kunst der Griechen und Römer sowie zur Rezeption der antiken Kunst. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit widmet er dem Blick und den Akten des Schauens und Zeigens in der Ekphrasis und den Formen der Visualisierung in Texten und Kunstwerken, zuletzt etwa im vieldiskutierten Artemidor-Papyrus, aber auch in der Religion (im Rahmen der Festgesandtschaft, griechisch: theoria, als Form der Wallfahrt) und der Physiognomik. Wissenschaftsgeschichtlich setzt sich Elsner darüber hinaus mit Vorgängern wie Alois Riegl und Josef Strzygowski auseinander.
