Giovanni Villani (* vor 1276 in Florenz; † 1348 ebenda an der Pest) war ein italienischer Geschichtsschreiber.

Das genaue Geburtsjahr des Chronisten ist unbekannt, da er jedoch spätestens ab 1300 als Teilhaber der Handelsgesellschaft der Peruzzi dokumentiert ist, war er zu diesem Zeitpunkt mindestens 24 Jahre alt. Sein Vater war Villano di Stoldo di Bellincia. Giovanni sammelte zunächst kaufmännische Erfahrung und war auch sehr erfolgreich. Die Informationen, die er während seiner Arbeit erhielt, flossen in sein Geschichtswerk (Cronica) mit ein, welches somit den Charakter einer ausschließlich stadtgeschichtlichen Chronik von Florenz verlor, obwohl die Stadt immer im Mittelpunkt der Darstellung stand. Er war auch in der Stadtpolitik aktiv, musste aber 1331 die Politik wegen des Vorwurfs der Unterschlagung aufgeben. Zum Ende seines Lebens wurde er in mehrere Finanzprozesse verwickelt und musste dafür sogar kurze Zeit ins Gefängnis (1346). Sein Geschichtswerk wurde von seinem Bruder Matteo bis zu dessen Todesjahr 1364 fortgesetzt. Das Werk ist in der italienischen Volkssprache abgefasst und vertritt den guelfischen (anti-kaiserlichen) Standpunkt, wenn auch nicht übertrieben: So wird Kaiser Heinrich VII., für dessen Italienzug Villanis 9. Buch eine wichtige Quelle ist, insgesamt recht ausgewogen beurteilt; allerdings enthält das Werk manche historische Irrtümer, was aber der Gesamtbedeutung nicht schadet.
