Regolith

Regolith (altgriechisch ῥῆγμα, regma = Bruch und λἰθος, lithos = Stein) ist in der Geomorphologie eine Decke aus Lockermaterial, die sich durch chemische und physikalische Verwitterung über dem darunter liegenden unverwitterten Ausgangsmaterial gebildet hat. Die Definition ist etwas unterschiedlich. Manche Forscher beziehen den Saprolith noch mit ein, andere tun es nicht. Auch eventuell darüberliegende jüngere Deckschichten werden zum Regolith gerechnet. Der Begriff wird nicht nur für Verwitterungsdecken auf der Erde verwendet, sondern auch für die in erster Linie physikalisch verwitterten Lockersedimente auf der Oberfläche von anderen Himmelskörpern (z. B. Mondregolith oder Marsregolith).
