Das Parsec (abgekürzt für Parallaxensekunde oder parallaktische Sekunde, Einheitenzeichen pc) ist eine Längenmaßeinheit außerhalb des Internationalen Einheitensystems.

Sie wird in der Astronomie, neben der Astronomischen Einheit und dem Lichtjahr, für die Entfernungsangabe von Himmelskörpern verwendet.

Definition

Ein Parsec ist definiert als die Entfernung eines Sterns, dessen halbe jährliche Parallaxe genau eine Bogensekunde (1" = 1°/3600) ist. Äquivalent ist die Aussage, dass aus einer Entfernung von einem Parsec der mittlere Radius der Erdbahn (die Astronomische Einheit, AE) unter einem Winkel von einer Bogensekunde erscheint. Sehr vereinfacht gesagt: wenn man 1 pc von der Erde entfernt ist, sind Erde und Sonne eine Bogensekunde voneinander entfernt. Ist p die Parallaxe eines Sterns in Bogensekunden, so erhält man seine Entfernung d in Parsec mit der Formel d = 1 / p; dabei wird die Näherung tan α ≈ α verwendet, die bei den sich aus astronomischen Entfernungen ergebenden kleinen Winkeln α gültig ist. Aus dieser Definition ergeben sich für die Umrechnung in andere Längeneinheiten folgende Werte:[1]

Das Parsec gehört nicht zum Internationalen Einheitensystem. Es wird aber in der Astronomie bevorzugt verwendet, da es direkt an die Parallaxenmessung angeschlossen ist – eine der grundlegenden Methoden zum Messen astronomischer Entfernungen.

In der galaktischen und extragalaktischen Astronomie werden die üblichen Vorsätze für Maßeinheiten verwendet, insbesondere Kiloparsec (kpc; typische Größe von Galaxien), Megaparsec (Mpc; typische Größe von Galaxienhaufen) und Gigaparsec (Gpc; Durchmesser des beobachtbaren Universums).
