British Indian Army war der Name der indischen Truppen und ihrer britischen Offiziere während der britischen Herrschaft in Indien (1858–1947). Sie bildete gemeinsam mit Kontingenten, die ausschließlich aus Großbritannien stammten, die Army of India oder Army in India. Inzwischen wird der Begriff British Indian Army aber auch für die Gesamtheit der britischen und indischen Truppen in Britisch-Indien verwendet, um diese von der modernen Indian Army abzugrenzen.

Geschichte

Nach der Niederwerfung des Sepoy-Aufstandes wurde 1858 die Britisch-Ostindische-Handelsgesellschaft (British East India Company) aufgelöst. Die britische Regierung sah in deren Praktiken bei der Behandlung der indischen Bevölkerung die Hauptursache für den Aufstand. Die Territorien der Kompanie wurden der Krone unterstellt und die Armee der Britischen Ostindien-Kompanie wurde die Armee der britischen Regierung von Indien. Die Army of India enthielt zu diesem Zeitpunkt sowohl britische als auch indische Einheiten. Die Armee bestand zu dieser Zeit aus drei Teilen:

  • Bengal Army
  • Madras Army
  • Bombay Army

Diese Aufteilung der Truppen wurde 1895 offiziell abgeschafft, existierte aber noch bis ca. 1904. Alle Soldaten waren Freiwillige und hatten nach 21 Jahren Dienst einen Anspruch auf eine Pension. Die größte Konzentration von Einheiten der British Indian Army befand sich an der North-West Frontier, der Nord-West-Grenze nach Afghanistan. Die Briten befürchteten, dass Russland von dort zum Angriff um die Vorherrschaft in Zentralasien, dem The Great Game, antreten würde. Dort waren neun Divisionen stationiert.

Befehligt wurden die Truppen in Indien vom Commander-in-Chief in India. Prominente Oberbefehlshaber waren Robert Napier, Lord Roberts, Lord Kitchener, Claude Auchinleck und Archibald Wavell.

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden durch den Oberbefehlshaber Lord Kitchener umfangreiche Reformen durchgeführt, vor allem die Zusammenführung der drei Teilarmeen unter einem Kommando. Die dadurch entstandene Army of India bestand von 1903 bis 1947 aus:

  • Truppen aus einheimischen Soldaten mit britischen Offizieren, der sogenannten Indian Army und
  • Truppen der British Army, die für einen bestimmten Zeitraum (20 Jahre) nach Indien kommandiert waren, der British Army in India.

Die Indian Army umfasste zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts 141.890 Mann Infanterie, 24.854 Mann Kavallerie und 3.104 Mann Artillerie. Die British Army in India umfasste 77.075 Mann Infanterie, 6.056 Mann Kavallerie und 17.140 Mann Artillerie.

Die britischen und indischen Einheiten wurden in einer gemeinsamen Kommandostruktur zu einer Nord- und Süd-Armee bestehend aus insgesamt neun Infanteriedivisionen und acht Kavalleriebrigaden zusammengefasst.

Bei Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges war die Indian Army 205.000 Mann stark. Im Verlaufe des Krieges wuchs sie auf über 2,5 Millionen Mann.

Die Teilung des indischen Subkontinents in zwei Staaten 1947, die Indische Union und die Islamische Republik Pakistan führte zum Aufbau der Indian Armed Forces und der Streitkräfte Pakistans und zur Teilung der British Indian Army. Die britischen Einheiten, die in Indien stationiert waren, kehrten in ihre Heimat zurück.
