  • 1828: Der Franzose René Caillié erreicht als Araber verkleidet als zweiter Europäer nach Alexander Gordon Laing das in Europa geheimnisumwitterte Timbuktu am Niger. Die Stadt entpuppt sich als klein, unbedeutend und arm. Seine für Europa enttäuschenden Berichte führen bis heute dazu, dass seine Anwesenheit in Timbuktu angezweifelt wird.
