-logie

Die Endung -logie kommt vom griechischen λόγος (Transliteration: lógos), bedeutet „Wort“, aber auch „Lehre“, „Sinn“, „Rede“, „Vernunft“[1] und bezeichnet in der Regel die Wissenschaft zu einem Gebiet. Die Endung -nomie hat oft dieselbe Funktion (Ökologie und Ökonomie), allerdings können die dadurch beschriebenen Begriffe sehr stark voneinander abweichen, siehe z. B. Gastrologie und Gastronomie.

Die Endung -logie weist meist auf eine reine Wissenschaft hin, während die Endung -nomie meist anwendungsbezogene Bereiche bezeichnet. Ein historisches Gegenbeispiel dieser Regel ist die Astronomie, die sich tatsächlich und begrifflich von der nicht-wissenschaftlichen Astrologie abspaltete.

Ausnahmen sind alle Werkzyklen, die auf -logie enden: Dilogie (2), Trilogie (3), Tetralogie (4), Pentalogie (5), Hexalogie (6), Heptalogie (7), Oktalogie (8), Ennealogie (9), Dekalogie (10), Dodekalogie (12).

Weitere Ausnahmen sind: Analogie, Anthologie, Antilogie, Apologie, Doxologie, Eulogie, Ideologie, Haplologie, Homologie, Tautologie.
